RESEARCH

We are on the cutting edge of sexual medicine research.

Sexual medicine research focuses on understanding the unique biological, psychological, and social (biopsychosocial) factors that influence sexual health and function. It is an under-funded and under-researched area. We are in need of more dedicated studies addressing conditions such as low sexual desire, arousal disorders, pain with sex (dyspareunia), and hormonal influences across the lifespan.

We lead and partner with organizations, medical researchers and physicians, and universities focused on studying sexual health and function. â€‹We want to be part of the solution and move the needle on advancements in sexual medicine!

Sexual Medicine Research Team (SMRT)

Dr. Rubin founded SMRT and has mentored medical students and guided their research in various areas of conditions impacting sexual function. SMRT continues to grow with pre-med and medical students interested in sexual medicine.

SMRT's mission to make sexual health as essential and celebrated as any other aspect of healthcare. They are a passionate crew of healthcare pros, researchers, advocates, and students, all working together to shake things up in the world of sexual medicine. Their latest work includes researching Genitourinary Syndrome of Lactation (GSL) and an Understanding the Functional Significance of the Labia Minora.

International Society for the Study of Women's Sexual Health (ISSWSH)

ISSWSH is a multidisciplinary, academic, and scientific organization that provides opportunities for communication among scholars, researchers, and practitioners about women's sexual function and sexual experience. They are dedicated to educating practitioners and providing the public with accurate information about women's sexuality and sexual health.

They sponsor research grants focused on women's sexual health, and we report on our research efforts at ISSWSH conferences and educate through their courses.

Sexual Medicine Society of North America (SMSNA)

The Sexual Medicine Society of North America (SMSNA) is dedicated to promoting, encouraging, and supporting the highest standards of practice, research, education, and ethics in the study of human sexual function and dysfunction.

Dr. Rubin's Research Efforts

Dr. Rubin's research aims to advance evidence-based treatments for sexual health conditions, including sexual pain disorders, low libido, erectile dysfunction, and genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM). She has authored numerous peer-reviewed articles and book chapters and serves as former associate editor for the Journal of Sexual Medicine Review and an associate editor the Video Journal of Sexual Medicine.

Dr. Rubin's work addresses the underexplored area of vaginal hormones in women's health. She advocates for the use of vaginal estrogen and DHEA (prasterone) as first-line treatments for genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM), emphasizing their role in preventing urinary tract infections, alleviating urinary urgency, and enhancing sexual arousal and lubrication.
