The demand for sexual medicine care continues to grow and so does the practice! We are growing in physicians - welcome Dr. Vaccaro to our DC area office and Dr. Winter to our LA office! But we are also growing across our entire support team! This practice has doubled in just two months - it's so exciting!
A few months ago we established our Pre-Med Internship program to inspire the next generation of medical students in sexual medicine. And we specifically targeted pre-med students in their gap years! We received tons of interest and it was so hard to select from the caliber of students that applied.
This week we welcomed our three interns who will support us as medical assistants - Sarah, Adele, and Grace. They arrived excited and inspired to learn about sexual medicine! Unfortunately, sexual medicine isn’t a part of most medical school curricula, but we are committed to teaching our interns (read: future doctors) about sexual medicine, so that it becomes integrated with comprehensive care across specialties.
They will be part of our medical assistant team and learn from the physicians but also from their stellar lead medical assistant Sophie, who has supported us over the past year in her gap years. Each of them has come to our practice with compassion and the desire to ensure that all patients are truly heard. With our increased capacity we hope to have more touch points with our patients, and quicker responses to messages in the portal and over the phone. We are excited to make sure you are cared for and can get back to feeling like your best self. Without further ado, meet our new cohort of interns/medical assistants!
Sarah is joining us after finishing up her Masters of Public Health at George Washington University, where she previously went to undergrad. She has worked in community health, harm reduction, and pain management in DC. She is eager to bring patients the tools for self-determined care so that they can lead functional, healthier lives. Sarah has lived in New York and Bangladesh but has called DC home for the past 7 years. Sarah is our resident gym-junkie and loves lifting weights, and when she’s not at the gym or in the office she likes trying new restaurants!
Adele comes to medicine after 7 years of non-medical professional experience, ranging from the religious sector to the trades (she was an auto mechanic!). Having experienced the self-empowerment that comes through learning to repair cars, she hopes to use medicine as a tool to empower patients through a similar self-discovery. She is fascinated by the bio-psycho-social approach that is unavoidable in sexual medicine. She graduated from Brown in 2017. Outside of work, she plays in a billiards league, studies classical organ, and tends to a vegetable and herb garden.
Grace’s passion is for patient advocacy, education, and public policy, especially for women. While in undergrad at Bucknell University she worked with one of our favorite organizations Tight Lipped and learned the power of deeply listening to patients’ stories. She is excited to apply patient advocacy on the clinical side at our practice. Right now, Grace is especially interested in learning how to leverage social media into patient education spaces. She is a trained scuba diver (she’s been 110 ft below the surface of the ocean!) and loves adrenaline-rich activities, but most often you’ll find her with her nose in a book.
Our practice is committed to advancing education for the next generation of medical professionals. If you are a medical professional and interested in learning more about sexual medicine and urology for patients of all genders, we would love to hear from you! We love working with pelvic floor physical therapists, sex therapists, premed, and medical students. You can reach us at info@rachelrubinmd.com!
